Who better than a fly on the wall, to tell this narrative tale? After all a fly would have the best seat in the house when it comes to spying on a family, and things aren’t always as they seem, particularly in this home. After Dominga’s first husband abandoned her and their little girl, she met and married James, and she thought she’d be happy again, and for quite awhile, she was. Then things got bad…really bad!

You see, James likes little girls; he really likes little girls. He goes out of his way to pacify and indulge Dominga in her every wish so that he can spend time alone with her precious little girl. He figures Dominga will never notice as long as she has all the things she’s ever wanted. In fact, he counts on it. James loves Saturday mornings. That’s when Dominga has her regular hair appointment, and he is left alone with Olivia. Some nights, when he’s unable to get to her, because Dominga is at home, he ventures out into several different neighborhoods, lurking in the bars, hoping to meet other needy women with little girls. And when he does, he worms his way into their homes armed with drinks, drugs and empty promises; knowing that once he takes care of mother’s needs he’ll be invited in. However, he’ll only stay long enough to get what he wants. These women think he wants them, but their little girls are who he’s really after. He can’t wait to touch them, to smell them, and to use their soft tender bodies, and once he’s finished with them, he disappears from their lives.

Dominga is in denial or maybe she really doesn’t have a clue, but there is no stopping James. That is until someone steps in to make sure James will never again be able to destroy the lives of innocent women, and their little girls.

EVEN NUMBERS edition by Barbara Grovner G8Visual Designs Goboi Carla Dean Literature Fiction eBooks

Even Numbers, by Barbara Grovner, is a controversial novel that takes the reader into the psyche of a child molester and his victim. After being abandoned by her first husband, Dominga believes she has found the man of her dreams. While not the most attractive man, James is charming, financially secure and embraces Dominga's daughter, Olivia, as if she were his own. There's just one thing - James has a sick fascination with little girls and fantasizes about their "...small innocent bodies and their soft, tender, warm flesh. He can't wait to touch them, smell them, and violate them..."

Undoubtedly, the author knows the damaging results of molestation and how the secrecy fosters shame and guilt. As a result, the spirit of innocent children is destroyed. Kudos to Mrs. Grovner for exposing a danger that is a reality for countless innocent victims!

The author makes an interesting choice to tell the story from the viewpoint of a fly. While I understood the "fly on the wall" reference and found it quite humorous, I personally think this choice minimizes the seriousness of her message. Maybe the fly was needed to give mental relief from such a dark story. Fly or no fly, the author's narrative gift more than makes up for this choice.

Even Numbers courageously brings a taboo subject to the forefront. It is a wake up call to mothers everywhere who may be blinded by love at the expense of their child(ren). Sexual predators are male and female, all races and ethnicities, young and old. They are conniving and manipulative. If this book opens just one mother's eyes, it can potentially save a life. A child deserves to be a child without the threat of abuse.

EVEN NUMBERS edition by Barbara Grovner G8Visual Designs Goboi Carla Dean Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I loved this story simply because it was told from a different standpoint. When drama is involved, everyone kind of wishes they were the fly on the wall when everything went down. In the case of this story, it's actually told from the fly on the wall's standpoint.

James is a handsome man who is not too flashy. He is quiet in demeanor but a good catch for any woman. James has a secret though. He is a predator who preys on lonely single mothers so he can have access to their little girls.

In a chance meeting, James meets Dominga at a bar. Dominga is a down on her luck single mother with a little girl named Olivia. After months of dating, James solidifies his place in Dominga and Olivia's lives by proposing to Dominga. They move away to another state away from all of their family.

Every Saturday, Dominga has a anding hair appointment that James uses to his advantage. He teaches young Olivia a new card game called Even Numbers but tells her their game is their little secret. Their is a shift in their household that Dominga just can't put her finger on. Will things change for better or worse?
Even Numbers is a book that I think EVERY single mother... better yet every woman needs to read. Actually, this is a book that should be a mandatory read in late middle to early high school years. So many lives could take a different course if this was talked about early on. The subject is very disturbing, yet very necessary to be acknowledged. Ms. Grovner has dared to tackle a taboo subject that many pretend doesn't exist. She did an excellent job of telling the story of James, Dominga and Olivia (being the subjects for this all too real tale), provoking a range of emotions to cause one to analyze their own life. I also loved how the cycle of perpetuation has been demonstrated.
Although I stated "the elephant in the room," the story is being told by a fly in the room, but the elephant being a subject that many know to exist, but choose to not see. I would love nothing more than to recap this story, but I don't think my own words would do the story any justice. This story held my attention for 3 ½ straight hours, brushing people off of the phone so I could continue with my reading. I will say this, Even Numbers is a MUST READ!!!! And after you read, TALK ABOUT IT!!! and then talk about it some more. This subject needs to be talked about, and I applaud Barbara for having the courage to boldly write about this. Bravo!!!
In 144 pages, my soul was traumatized!

144 pages?

Yep 144 pages filled with drama and misery moved me to the point of irreconcilable frustration. The author was successful in detailing the cyclic effects of child molestation and low self esteem in this unique book titled Even Numbers.

Have you ever wanted to be a fly on the wall? I know I did. And I think it's safe to assume that Author Barbara Grovner did too. As Even Numbers is told from the perspective of a fly you can't help but feel as helpless as the fly did as the story unfolds. His wings were tied just like my hands, as I read a story that made me want to be the protector of all children against the child predators of the world.

James, Dominga and Olivia lend a hand to the author in painting a picture of an enormous amount of needy women that ignore or are unaware of the consequences their low self esteem attributes to. As the reader follows the predator through the dark world of desperation for his next victim, the author drops clues and hints to the mindset of such a creature.

Since this book is a quick read, I won't tell much of the story line, but I will say that on a grand scale of things this narrative has multiple purposes. Not only does it entertain but it educates, it serves to be a channel for many girls and women to be able to relate without negative connotations, guilt or shame and to serve as a reminder that there is a need for everyone to be vigilant against the secret society of pedophiles.
