The Curtain Falls edition by Meg North Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Meg North's third book is a fast paced fantasy novel, blending the heart felt Victorian romance of her first two novels with a light fantastical touch.
Olivia Nichols is an airy, flighty young woman whom the grimy world constantly pulls down into the muck. In her desire to flee a dreary present, she is drawn into the web of Julian Sterling, proprietor of a travelling (or teleporting?) magic troupe.
The book's tidy size abets the story, very lean and well paced. Olivia skips breathlessly from moment to moment and you are caught in the rush of Ms. North's prose. A welcome addition to her library.
The Curtain Falls is set in the late 19th century and tells the story of Olivia, a teenager who feels trapped at home and longs for the theater life that her mom was famous for. She ends up getting more than she asked for when a magic ticket transports to a run down theater that seems be on its way back to life.
The book is told from Olivia's point of view and she does sound like what I'd imagine a teenager from back then sounded like. As a character, she comes off as a naive, sheltered young woman who longs to find her place in life and maybe someone to share that place with. It's quite interesting to follow her and see how she reacts to things not being quite what she expects in the theater.
The book is fast-paced and you'll never get bored by it. The story finds its logical conclusion and doesn't leave any questions unanswered. I'd recommend it, if you like romance and magic and are looking to get away from the present for a bit.
This was a big surprise given the story lines of her first two books ( which were excellent). But like Meg's previous tales she held me close and emotionally involved. I enjoyed the ride.
This paranormal tidbit takes a different sort of magic to a new and spooky realm. There are some good ideas here, used well to tell a story that is different from most other places you may have seen these same ideas. A girl caught in a mirror; a magic act that really is magic; bad spirits taking advantage of others' hopes, dreams and fears. I'd offer another half a star if they were available
Meg North delivers a tale of intrigue and romance in the spell-binding "The Curtain Falls". I was hooked from the first page by the protagonist, Olivia, a naive but inquisitive young woman who only wants to break away from the monotony of her every day life at home with her mother. Given the chance to join a mysterious theater, she is soon wrapped up in the awe and wonder of its magic as well as the allure of an enigmatic magician. I enjoyed North's evocative use of language and her knowledge of Victorian life. It was a wonderful book to become lost in.
Meg North's descriptions of Victorian Portland are so atmospheric that it felt like a true escape to another era. I instantly felt sorry for the young protagonist, Olivia, who is suffering under the confines of being a woman in the 1800's. Her dreams of being an actress, of experiencing life beyond her family home's walls, are squashed by everyone around her. The paranormal element is artfully introduced and woven into the story. There are a lot of twists and turns, which kept me hooked.
Without giving too much away, as Olivia's life is threatened and she gets her first bitter taste of betrayal, I found myself rooting for her and hoping her naivete wouldn't be the cause of her demise. The Phantom of the Opera elements were there, but this story is unique on it's own.
